Jay and Alastair are the ultimate duo, successful, lonely, and wanting nothing more than to be loved. But what really swept me along is the emotional journey they take together. This novel has it all: the action is intense, the conversation scintillating, and the love scenes intimate in that soft, dizzying way that is a JR Lawrie hallmark. There are some adorable supporting cast members. I could stay with Jay and Alastair at Cliveden forever.I sped through the book on release day, eager to follow the action. Now I'm going for a slower reread to get to know every facet of the characters. At about 500 kindle pages, this is a meaty story, as well as an emotional masterpiece. 2.5 StarsThe Sheltering Tree is a book that had the potential to be a sweetly satisfying read, if only it'd come in at half its length. There's a good bit of word count wasted on the POV of characters who ultimately had no impact on the overall story, neither advancing the plot nor providing exposition that was critical to Jay and Alastair's romance, as well as some repetitive internal monologuing that, combined, left me skimming frequently to find where the story itself picked up again. I can only imagine how difficult it is for an author to "kill your darlings," but in this case, I believe less would have been more.Some logic gaps also required the suspension of belief, most notably that a man in the witness protection program could attend a high-profile event, be seated next to the police commissioner, but somehow avoid having his photo splashed all over the internet before the event's end. Another left me nonplused in the delicate aftermath of taking a blow to the privates serious enough to leave bruises.In the end, this book came off just a touch too twee and worshipful of its protagonists and their relationship for my tastes, but I'm exceedingly glad for those who've read and loved it.
