This is a review for both for the book and for the series. The book has a generic litrpg with the twist that the world becomes the game. This means there is no in and out, and no respawn which I enjoy. Our MC is ok. He's a bit bland but the standard progression is done reasonably well. The support team is about average. The setting of real world avoids the NPC issue to some extent. As a book I'd give a 4/5, solid start.Book two and some of book 3 are pretty average. Give them a two. There is looots of poor conflicted MC with anger issues. It gets pretty old. There was also some weird bisexuality in there. I'm not anti bisexuality but I'm getting a bit tired of it's prevalence in litrpg. It's also a bit jarring for me as a male to be shadowing this guys thoughts while he gets caught up in how dreamy another guy is. I didn't think it fit the character and in my experience, guys don't think like that. I guess women might feel the same reading the viewpoint of a male character appreciating a female, but for me it disrupts immersion.Book 4 is probably a 3. The issues from 2 and 3 reduce, but it becomes more of a worldbuilding book.As a series, I'll give a 3/5. I've read 6 of the 7 books currently in the series, and there were some things that I could overlook in the first books. However, by book 6 I just couldn't keep reading. I understand the nature of LitRPG and the importance of explaining, somewhat, the nature of the "game world" in the story. However, these stories spend paragraphs and paragraphs explaining how leveling and skill selection works, turning what could be a fascinating story into a very dry description of techniques for min-maxing and character builds. Frankly, if I was into that, I'd just go play a video game. Also, something that may not impact all readers but did for me: the unlikability of the main character. I didn't "dislike" him, but I just couldn't develop empathy for the character and what he was experiencing. I understood what the average person should be feeling, but he's a "cold fish," bisexual, atheist, and full of rage. I just felt sad for this train wreck of a character, like I would for an actual human being. I just couldn't continue the journey anymore. This review encompasses all the books I've read in the series.
