There are a lot of good things in Dickenson's book. It has an interesting world, and is technically well done. But while I was really looking forward to reading it, by the time I was halfway done, it was just a slog to finish it.There are basically two reasons. First off, it's depressing. Some people like that sort of thing, I am not so much a fan of it. Secondly, overwhelming the focus of the book is on sexual orientation, and the organized repression thereof. In real life and fiction, I am fine with people making their own orientation choices, but am less interested in reading a whole (depressing) book bewailing it. I'm sure some people are. Wish it had been in the description. I am now 20% through the book and I cannot go on any farther. Tedious, boring, confusing, not compelling are only a few words that quickly come to me with regard to this book. I could not get invested in any character including Baru Cormorant. I was not convinced to care about her trials and tribulations. At this point there is still no discernible plot. I care even less about the world that has been created and I am fearful if I continue to read on there will only be more of the same. The majority of reviewers loved the book. For the author's sake I hope I remain in the minority.
